3 Things to Do in The Morning to Keep Your Home Clean

STRUGGLING TO KEEP YOUR HOME CLEAN? CHECK OUT THE 3 VITAL THINGS TO DO EACH MORNING THAT WILL HELP.

I’m a morning person. That doesn’t work too well with me also being a gigging musician, but I’ve always loved waking up in the morning really early. And preferably before anyone else (or even the birds) are awake.

That being said, I’ve not always been a routines person. In fact, I’ve struggled most of my adult life to stick to any kind of routine (apart from eating). I’d love to tell you that I brush my teeth morning and night like clockwork, but… I don’t. I try, though!

I’ve always put my lack of routines down to the fact that I’m a creative person. I’m a musician. An artist. I can’t be boxed into one way of doing something! That would be crazy!

But in truth, it was just my own lack of self-discipline.

I’ve discovered over the past two years (since I started blogging in fact) that routines are actually my best friend. And they’re yours too! The most successful people you and I can think of (including any creative genius’) all succeeded because of their routines.

Routines are the secret sauce to improvement. And improving our homes are no different.

So when I decided that I’d had enough of living in a constantly chaotic home, I knew that I had to build in some routines to keep my home in a manageable state. And in this post, I’ll share 3 tasks that I do in the morning which I think are vital to keeping your home clean.

3 things to do in the morning to keep your home clean

1. Do a load of laundry

If you’ve got kids, then doing a load of laundry a day is a must. There have been weeks where I’ve not done the laundry for like three days in a row and the kids apparently have nothing to wear. Nobody can find a clean pair of underpants and all the towels are gone!

Basically, chaos ensues! Don’t let that happen! Prevent a clothing catastrophe by doing at least one load of laundry a day. If you have a bigger family, like my friend with seven kids, then you might want to do two loads!

How this works in my morning routine is that when I wake up and come downstairs, I start making my coffee (#butfirstcoffee) and whilst my coffee grounds are working their magic, I put a load in the washing machine since I’m already in the kitchen.

I keep my laundry powder right next to the washing machine so that I can just put in a scoop, switch it on and it’s done.

Of course, at some point later in the day, I need to take the wet clothes out and put them in the dryer. For me, this is usually before lunchtime when I have another natural break in my day (and I’m back in my kitchen). But if you go out to work in the morning, then it’s just as easy to do this when you get in. Your clothes won’t smell from staying in your machine for 8 hours – it takes considerably longer, trust me!

And the folding and putting away can be done in the afternoon or evening – and even by someone else in the family – why not!

2. Put the dishes away

This is another task that’s crucial for the morning. It’s basically getting your sink prepared to take on the dishes for the new day by clearing away the clean dishes that are either on your dish drying rack or in your dishwasher.

If you have a dishwasher, emptying it in the morning is critical, because when dishes start getting used at breakfast, people can put their dirty dishes straight into the machine rather than dumping them on the counters or leaving them in the sink for the “dishwashing fairy”!

And messy kitchen counters cause stress and greatly reduces your desire to do any kind of cooking whatsoever. So this is a job I do right after starting my washing machine and before I grab my morning cup of coffee. (I see my coffee as a little reward for getting these two jobs done!)

3. Know (and schedule) your cleaning chores for the day

Now, I’d love to tell you that doing those two things above would automatically render your home clean. But they won’t. Unless you hire a maid, there are gonna be more cleaning jobs for you (and the members of your family). So the last one I have for you here is choosing your cleaning job(s) for the day.

Because I like to wake up at the crack of dawn, I don’t do any chores really early. I wait for everyone else to get up, get dressed and eat, because, to be honest, it helps my kids to do their chores if they see me doing some too.

Schedule your chores

But what I do do is I look at what needs to get done for the day. Whether that’s changing the bedsheets, wiping the mirrors or cleaning the tub. And then, here’s the crucial part, I schedule when I will get that chore done.

This is vital because what gets scheduled, gets done. Often, my daily chores don’t take longer than 30 minutes. But if I don’t specify which 30 minutes it will happen in, I’ll find that the whole day has gone by and it never got done.

And I generally do have to schedule them because my days all tend to look different. I don’t have a regular rhythm to my day because our family has so many things going on. If your family’s schedule is like clockwork, then you probably already know when chores will be done in your home. Whatever your situation, it’s important that you can set aside time to do those regular household maintenance jobs.

And when you’re doing your household chores daily, you’ll find that your home is generally tidy. There won’t be anymore last minute tidying frenzies when someone tells you they’re popping over in half an hour!

It’s the routine of doing a little something every day to keep your home clean, that ultimately keeps your home clean.

So, those are three things that you can do in the morning to help keep your home tidy and avoid those last-minute tidying frenzies!
