ALIGN YOUR GOALS WITH LIFE'S SEASONS AND STAY INSPIRED

Hey there, goal-getters! Kick back and grab a cuppa. In this post, I'm talking about setting goals and why it's like trying to choose the perfect pair of shoes – it needs to fit your style. And timing, my friend, is everything. That's right. In this post, we'll be looking at how we can set goals that resonate with the ebb and flow of our lives.

There are different kinds of goals

Goals come in all shapes and sizes, a bit like a pick 'n' mix of life aspirations. There are those big, shiny achievement goals that make you feel on top of the world, and then there are those keep-you-grounded habit goals that might not look impressive day to day but can create life-changing results.

I like to break goals down into ten life domains, which I've adapted from my mentor Michael Hyatt. These are;

  1. Spiritual

  2. Health

  3. Personal growth

  4. Marital/love

  5. Family/parental

  6. Social/community

  7. Work

  8. Financial

  9. Home and lifestyle

  10. Fun

You don't need to be working on a goal in every area at the same time. In fact, that's what this post is all about. We'll be touching on which goals make sense for your current season. Because if you really want to create change in your life, it's important to filter things out, focus down, and pour your effort into fewer things, than trying to improve all areas all at the same time.

Why is it important for our goals to have seasons?

Life's a bit like a Netflix series – it's got seasons. And just like you wouldn't cosy up with a winter warmer soup on a scorching summer day, some goals don't quite fit every life season. Imagine deciding to start a world tour when you're seven months pregnant – that's like trying to run a marathon in stilettos. Ouch!!

Plus, there are the annual seasons. You wouldn't try landscaping your garden in November when the ground is harder than your last breakup. Or host a beach party in December when the weather's got other plans. 🥶

In the same way, some goals make sense at certain times and others border on the demented!

But how do you know if your goal is pushing boundaries or is just plain crazy?

That's a good question!

Big, hairy, audacious goals are admirable and will definitely push you to grow in your character and your abilities. I think that everyone should make space for big goals in their life because I'm a huge fan of personal development. But you can start to get the feeling of whether a goal has moved from bold to batty when it has crossed over from possible to impossible.

Note, that there's a difference between impossible and improbable.

Improbable goals are those goals that naysayers in your life will deter you from achieving because it all sounds like too much hard work. Lose 80 pounds? Yeah right! Start a business selling knitwear? Puh-LEEZ! You can even imagine their eye-rolling too, am I right?

But the truth is that losing 80 pounds isn't impossible if you weigh over 200 pounds. And starting your own business might have lots of obstacles, but it's not impossible - even if you're someone who's incredibly shy and doesn't like to put herself out there.

Impossible goals are more like losing 80 pounds when you only weigh 85. Or planning to buy a house next week when you don't have a dime to your name and a credit score lower than a Siberian winter on a chilly day.

How do I know which season I should work on which goal?

Life's a bit like a puzzle, isn't it? You've got all these pieces scattered around, and you're trying to make sense of the bigger picture. When it comes to setting goals, it's about understanding the puzzle pieces – your time, energy, and commitments. Sometimes you've got to rearrange the pieces, and maybe swap out a few, to make room for that big, audacious goal you've got your eye on.

In short, you need to consider the time, energy, and commitment that's required for you to achieve your goal. And yes, that may mean having to shuffle a few things around, to make room for a new goal in your life.

My advice is to allow yourself a bit more time and energy when you're trying to achieve something new. With new things, it's hard for us to know everything we'll need to do or even how long it'll take for us to reach the milestones along the way. Giving yourself an extra allowance of time and energy means that those inevitable bumps, obstacles and unforeseen issues don't completely de-rail you and make you want to throw in the towel.
